Flying Geese

Almost every block that I create has this “geese” unit as a part of it.  There are several great methods for making them, and I use two almost exclusively.  The method I would like to share with you does waste a bit of fabric, but has the benefit of helping me to create nearly flawless blocks.  And … I have a tip for using up the otherwise wasted bits (what I call Quilt Crumbs)!

Usually, when making any type of block with triangles in it, we must cut many triangle shapes with either a rotary cutter and ruler, or by using templates.  Then, we need to figure out where the center is, match points, and take time to make sure everything lines up perfectly.  This just never worked for me.  First, I am impatient in my craft, and second, I get distracted a lot!  So, I was really excited when I found this method.  If I could remember where I first learned of it, I would definitely give credit to the designer!  And, this method can be used not only for this “geese” unit, but also for Square in a Square, for making half-square triangles, and even for putting blocks (or quilts) on point!

Please note that all instructions are for a 3” x 6” finished unit, but can be adapted for any size.

Cut 1 rectangle of your main fabric 3½" x 6½".

Cut 2 squares of contrasting fabric 3½" x 6½".

Place 1 constrasting square onto the main rectangle, right sides together.  Make sure 3 edges are even and that corners line up.

Place your ruler on your stacked square with the first ¼" line on the ruler running from corner to corner.  Cut.  This gives you the ¼" seam allowance you need.

Stitch from corner to corner.  Press triangle away from the main rectangle, pressing seam to one side (not open).

Repeat on other side.

Now, with those Quilt Crumbs, simply sew them together along the diagonal, press, trim the “ears” and you’ve got some half-square triangles all ready to go for another project.
